IN CONVERSATION WITH THE ARCHITECT

In conversation with Oliver Sterl of RLP Rüdiger Lainer Architekten + Partner ZT GmbH, Vienna

// With HoHo Wien, RLP Rüdiger Lainer + Partner built one of the world's tallest timber high-rises. In conversation, Oliver Sterl explains how urban context, fire safety and hybrid construction came together — and why long-lasting, use-neutral primary structures are key to cutting CO₂ and keeping buildings viable for 200 years.

IN CONVERSATION WITH THE ARCHITECT

Martin Haas, haascockzemmrich STUDIO 2050

// Martin Haas of haascookzemmrich STUDIO 2050 shows how sustainable architecture, regional materials and circular construction come together in the Rapunzel, Alnatura, Groß Kreutz, Königstraße and Schömberg projects. The focus is not only on technical solutions, but also on architectural attitude, long-term usability and a tangible spatial quality.

IN CONVERSATION WITH THE ARCHITECT

In conversation with Kees de Haan and Esther Postma from J.O.N.G. architecten, Balk (NL)

// Rising cost pressures, structural change and a shortage of new entrants are also leading to increasing numbers of farms being abandoned in the Netherlands. What remains are farmsteads that have lost their original function but simultaneously hold enormous spatial and cultural potential. With their monastery project in Jorwert, as well as other works, J.O.N.G. architecten demonstrate how such building fabric can be sustainably developed.

IN CONVERSATION WITH THE ARCHITECT

A conversation with Dirk Stenzel from the Leipzig architecture practice ASUNA

// For ASUNA, architecture is a means of bringing urban spaces to life and promoting sustainable urban development. The aim is to design buildings and urban spaces that consistently consider the relationship between ecology and construction technology, and to develop contemporary architecture from this approach. The client groups involved are more than just users of the building: they actively contribute, discuss material choices, floor plans and construction processes, making each building a vibrant community project.

ARCHITECTS TALK

Frederik Ehling, Architect and Founding Partner, DGJ Architektur

// DGJ Architektur has stood for innovative ideas in sustainable housing for over 25 years. With the student residence Collegium Academicum on the former US hospital site in Heidelberg, the firm has realized a forward-looking modular timber construction project. The development combines social commitment, architectural flexibility, and ecological responsibility. Timber construction, circular principles, low-tech strategies, and a high degree of prefabrication play a central role throughout.

ARCHITECTS TALK

Marc Ritz, Architect and Founding Partner, CURA Architekten

// With the extension of the school campus in Davos, Switzerland, CURA Architekten from Munich have created a contemporary educational building that carefully evolves the original 1960s structure. The design approaches sustainability not as the addition of ambitious performance metrics, but as a holistic mindset — from preserving embodied carbon and implementing a flexible timber frame structure to integrating low-tech ventilation solutions. The result is an inspiring environment with diverse spaces for learning and interaction, seamlessly combining pedagogical openness with ecological responsibility.

IN CONVERSATION WITH THE ARCHITECT

Thorsten Rebbereh, Architect and Entrepreneur

// Building faster, living more flexibly and reducing CO₂ emissions—using a construction material that has so far been used primarily in commercial buildings: steel. Architect Thorsten Rebbereh from Hildesheim developed the “Green Steel Home,” an unconventional residential building that opens up entirely new perspectives for sustainable construction.

IN CONVERSATION WITH THE ARCHITECT

Felicitas Schoberth, Architect and Founding Partner at KEBE + SCHOBERTH Architekten

// The former Town Hall of Berlin-Marzahn, an administrative building of GDR modernism, is currently undergoing extensive renovation. KEBE + SCHOBERTH ARCHITEKTEN are responsible for nearly all project phases—from analysis to implementation—demonstrating how high energy standards can be combined with the requirements of heritage conservation. We spoke with architect Felicitas Schoberth to learn more about the project.

IN CONVERSATION WITH THE ARCHITECT

Jan Wirth, Architect and Managing Director at Wirth Architekten

// In Rotenburg (Wümme), between Bremen and Hamburg, the planners recently completed the “Holzrotonda.” This unusually designed single-family home, resembling a mushroom resting on a narrow base, stands out not only visually but also impresses with a strong ecological balance. We spoke with founder Jan Wirth to learn more about the project and the architects’ working approach.

IN CONVERSATION WITH THE ARCHITECT

Marijn Schenk, Architect and Co-Founder of NEXT architects

// Located in the heart of Amsterdam’s Amstelkwartier district, the planners transformed a former warehouse of the KBF chewing gum factory into a contemporary office building. The project uniquely connects old and new while setting high standards in terms of sustainability.

IN CONVERSATION WITH THE ARCHITECT

Michael Ziller, Architect and Managing Director of zillerplus Architekten

// In times of climate crisis, housing shortages and increasing complexity, how can homes be created that are more than just private retreats? We spoke with founder Michael Ziller about this question.

IN CONVERSATION WITH

Thomas Müller, Owner of Thomas Mueller Chartered Surveyor GmbH & Co. KG

// In planning the residential quarter “Kastanienallee am Teich” in Darmstadt, the responsible parties consistently took an ecological approach—from integration into the surrounding green environment and energy supply to rainwater management. In conversation with Thomas Müller, managing partner of the project company, we learn why sustainable construction requires not only good ideas, but also long-term perseverance.

EDITORIAL

Reimagine, Rebuild, Revolutionise and Refurb: The Untapped Potential of Existing Buildings

// Forget groundbreaking ceremonies. The true construction revolution is happening within the existing four walls, offering a powerful path to sustainability and modernisation.

ARCHITECT INTERVIEW

Maarten Terberg on Circular Building: The Vision of EVA Architecten

// The Utrecht-based architecture firm EVA is renowned for its clean, straightforward designs that often surprise with distinctive detailing. A striking example is ‘Omega’ – an energy-neutral and fully circular office building recently completed in a business park near the South Holland city of Dordrecht. We spoke with partner Maarten Terberg to learn more about this forward-thinking project.

FEATURED PROJECT

Organically rounded and fully recyclable

// The Netherlands' first energy-neutral business park is taking shape in Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht A central highlight is the “Omega” office building by EVA architects – a fully circular structure with a strikingly curved glass façade. SURE-WELD® TPO/FPO membranes and HERTALAN® EPDM membranes from CARLISLE® were used to waterproof the roof surfaces. These membranes, like all other materials used, can be completely removed if necessary.

ARCHITECT INTERVIEW

Igor Brncic on Rethinking Existing Buildings: OLIV’s Vision for Sustainable Architecture

// The Munich-based firm OLIV Architekten has specialised in the revitalisation of existing buildings for over twenty years. The aim is to significantly extend the life cycle of existing buildings and make a valuable contribution to climate protection. We spoke to office partner Igor Brncic to find out more about how the architecture work.

FEATURED PROJECT

Stretching the Chewing Gum Factory to an Office Building

// In Amsterdam, local firm NEXT architects has transformed the former warehouse of a chewing gum factory into a modern, transparent office building. The result is a striking blend of materials - steel, glass, and wood - that harmoniously integrates with its surroundings. To ensure the roof’s waterproofing, RESITRIX® SK W Full Bond EPDM membrane from CARLISLE® was used, while retention elements and photovoltaic modules above enhance the building's sustainability.

ARCHITECT INTERVIEW

Kay Künzel on Serial Renovation: Future-Ready with the Energiesprong Principle

// The Dutch ‘Energiesprong’ programme has been enabling fast, cost-effective renovation of housing estates with prefabricated ‘plug & play façades’ for years. The approach is now gaining ground in Germany, too. We spoke with architect Kay Künzel from raum für architektur, who has long used timber prefab elements in his projects.

FEATURE

Lights, Camera and Action! ARBOFLEX® Breathes New Life into the BFI Southbank Roofscape

// As we continue to spotlight the refurbishment revolution shaping the UK’s built environment, one project exemplifies how modern materials can support cultural legacy. On London’s iconic South Bank, the British Film Institute (BFI) is a national bastion of film heritage and education that has recently undergone a critical transformation, safeguarding its future without compromising its past.

FEATURE
