Welcome to the spring edition of BLACKPRINT DIGITAL, CARLISLE® CM Europe's online magazine for architects. Spring is a season synonymous with new beginnings also considered as the ideal time to start construction projects - so what better time to reflect on the idea of a construction revolution? Often, the spotlight falls on new builds. But true progress in construction doesn’t lie solely in starting from scratch. Every new structure carries the weight of embodied energy - a resource we can significantly conserve by embracing the inherent value of our existing buildings. For architects and designers committed to a sustainable future, it’s here - in the heart of our cities, in the structures already standing - that we hold the greatest potential for climate protection, resource conservation, and social change.

Refurb Revolution

The renovation and conversion of existing buildings is becoming a central building block of a sustainable building culture. Pioneering renovation concepts are already demonstrating how innovative approaches and modular prefabricated building elements can transform large housing stocks quickly, economically, energy-efficiently, and socially acceptable. But there is also enormous potential beyond the housing sector: Vacant department stores, derelict office space, or derelict infrastructure offer a wide range of conversion options, just waiting to be reimagined and revitalised.

Its not just mitigating embodied carbon and CO₂ emissions. It’s a holistic approach encompassing intelligent urban development, fostering community participation and elevating quality of life. As architects, you are at the forefront of this transformative movement. You are the visionaries who can reinterpret spaces, bridge the narrative between heritage and innovation, and unlock the latent value within our built environment.

The construction revolution will only succeed if we begin to see existing buildings as valuable resources - architecturally, ecologically and culturally. It's time to take a fresh look at the old.

With that in mind, we wish you an insightful and inspiring read!

Kind regards
