Green Roof Waterproofing for Kellebeek College in Rosendaal (NL)

Application Example of RESITRIX® SK W in the Innovative Climate Roof

Curved facades, a light-filled entrance area, and spacious, greened rooftop lounges – the Kellebeek College goes to great lengths to create a pleasant learning environment for its students while integrating seamlessly into the green urban district. The 750 m² roof of the educational facility, constructed using root-resistant RESITRIX® SK W Full Bond waterproofing membranes, secured second place in the 2015 Dutch "Roof of the Year" competition.

But what makes this roof so special?

Sustainability played a key role in the construction of the building. As the educational institution focuses on modern healthcare with an emphasis on health and well-being, it was essential to align the project with the energy-conscious character of the surrounding district.

For this reason, a climate roof was chosen. This type of roof serves multiple functions: the classic waterproofing function, a green roof as a relaxation space for students, and an area for a water-filled heat storage system (also known as a green-blue roof).

A green-blue roof is a green roof capable of storing large amounts of water and gradually releasing it into the sewage system. This mechanism is especially effective during heavy rainfall. Urban planners are increasingly focusing on sustainable water management due to the rising frequency of intense rain events. To balance both heavy rainfall and periods of drought, water-retaining roofs play a crucial role.

The Roof Structure

The roofing system features the EPDM RESITRIX® SKW waterproofing membrane as the sealing layer and a deep drainage board with a drip hose. This combination ensures a permanent water supply beneath the roof garden, terrace, and hardened walkways. The total water storage capacity of the system on the roof can vary between 165 liters/m² and 225 liters/m².

Another advantage is that excess water is purified to near drinking water quality. Through a recirculation system, significant savings can be achieved, precisely matching the height and weight of the green roof. The system is connected to a regular and decoupled rainwater drainage system with an integrated purification system. This allows for the collection of water that meets the Dutch infiltration regulations, making it suitable for reuse as wash water, firefighting water, toilet flushing water, and irrigation for gardens, facades, ponds, and the planted roof.
