Overview

The BFI Southbank, a renowned film institution, required the refurbishment of its 350m2 roof. Located adjacent to the Grade II* listed Waterloo Bridge, the roof presented unique challenges due to its complex design, including raised GRP decks with vented vertical sections, circular domed roof lights and expansion joints to accommodate bridge movement. The existing roof covering was in poor condition, with lichen, moss and algae growth impacting both aesthetics and integrity.

The Project

This project faced several significant challenges. Working adjacent to a busy bridge with constant vehicular and pedestrian traffic required meticulous planning and safety measures. The Grade II* listed status of Waterloo Bridge imposed limitations on modifications and required careful consideration of all works. Moreover, the BFI remained fully operational throughout the project, necessitating minimal disruption to daily activities. Access limitations further complicated the project, as the proximity of the bridge and the building's structure precluded the use of scaffolding, requiring the use of MEWPs and a man-safe system.

To overcome these challenges, a comprehensive solution was implemented. A four-coat ARBOFLEX® PU system was specified for the GRP sections, providing a robust and durable waterproofing layer. Arbomeric MP20 sealant, a high-modulus modified polymer sealant from ARBO, was used for expansion joints, ensuring flexibility and durability.

The refurbishment of the gulley areas required innovative solutions to comply with the listed building restrictions. Existing fixings were maintained, and termination bars and metal flashings were adapted to fit the existing structure.

Rigorous safety measures were implemented throughout the project. Early morning site access minimized disruption to bridge traffic, and temporary fencing enhanced site safety and protected pedestrians. Meticulous planning and adherence to strict safety protocols ensured the wellbeing of the workforce.

The project was successfully completed, delivering a high-quality, long-lasting roof covering with minimal disruption to the BFI's operations and bridge traffic. The new roof covering significantly enhanced the building's aesthetics. The BFI was highly satisfied with the project outcome, praising the minimal disruption and the confidence in the long-term performance of the newly refurbished roof.

This project demonstrates the versatility of the ARBOFLEX PU system in addressing complex roofing challenges. The collaborative approach between the roofing contractor, the client, and the CARLISLE technical team was crucial in overcoming the unique obstacles presented by this challenging project.
