Balcony waterproofing with EPDM membranes

In the construction of a small holiday home settlement on the Baltic Sea, the executing company faced the challenge of waterproofing 44 balconies as quickly and securely as possible. The solution was pre-fabricated EPDM membranes, which only needed to be glued at the edges.
Olpenitz, located on the Baltic Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein, was originally known as a naval base. After the closure of the site in 2006, a large holiday village was planned for the area: the Ostseeresort Olpenitz. On the Captain’s Peninsula, a particularly picturesque spot within the site, the construction of eleven holiday homes in timber frame construction was planned, with the aim of integrating them harmoniously into the surrounding landscape while ensuring they were durable and sustainable.
Balcony waterproofing without fire hazard
The executing company faced the challenge of waterproofing 44 balconies of these holiday homes as quickly and securely as possible. For the waterproofing of the balconies, roofer and carpenter Björn Tölle recommended EPDM to the client. This material is particularly weather-resistant and thus durable due to its molecular network structure. Initially, Björn Tölle planned to use RESITRIX® EPDM roofing membranes.
He had had good experiences with this material and had been using it for his waterproofing projects for two years. One particularly important advantage for timber construction, according to the craftsman, is that the seams can be easily welded using hot air, without an open flame and thus without the risk of fire.
Waterproofing with pre-fabricated EPDM sheets
To seal the 44 balconies as quickly and safely as possible, our custom-made HERTALAN® EPDM sheets were the ideal solution. The sheets could be custom-sized in one piece for the balconies to be sealed, minimizing the manual seam connections to be made on site. Only in areas with penetrations, external corners, and recesses at the facade front were the seams connected using contact adhesive.
The sheets were pre-fabricated for the individual balconies and directly delivered to the construction site. The installation was done loosely with ballast. The EPDM sheets were spread over the substrate made of OSB boards, with internal corners folded and fixed using the HERTALAN® seam adhesive KS 96. For the edge bonding, Björn Tölle and his team used the HERTALAN® contact adhesive KS 205, which was applied using a spraying device. Bangkirai wooden planks were laid over the sheets.
Both the timber frame construction and the time savings during the balcony sealing work contributed to a relatively short construction period.
