What is the REACH restriction for diisocyanates?

Diisocyanates are chemical compounds that are found in many polyurethane (PU) products, such as adhesives and sealants. They can cause allergic reactions on the skin and respiratory tract, which can lead to health problems such as asthma.

To minimise the risk, the European Union has published a new REACH restriction for diisocyanates, which will come into force on 24 August 2023. The regulation requires that all professional and industrial processors of PU products that contain more than 0.1% monomeric diisocyanates must complete a training course.

Which products are affected?

The REACH restriction applies to all PU products that have a total concentration of monomeric diisocyanates of more than 0.1%. This means that you need to do the training if you use one or more of the following products from our range:

  • HERTALAN® KS143

  • HERTALAN® KS96 Primer

  • PU-LMF-02

Since 24 February 2022, we have indicated a training notice on the label of these products. Please note that the list of affected products may change as we introduce new products or adjust existing ones.

How can you do the training?

The training is available online and can be done at any time via desktop, tablet and mobile devices. It takes about 40 minutes and covers the relevant aspects regarding the safe use of diisocyanates. After successfully completing the training, you will receive a personal certificate that you can present if required.

The training platform was created by FEICA, the association of the European adhesive and sealant industry, in collaboration with ISOPA and ALIPA, the European industry associations of diisocyanate manufacturers. The training is available in several languages and takes into account the specificity of the products that you use.

How can you do the training for free?

We want to make the training as easy and accessible as possible for you. That’s why we offer you a voucher code that allows you to do the training for free. The voucher code is: FEICA_21_C12

To use the voucher code, you need to register on the training platform and enter the code when signing up. Then you can select and start the training for adhesive and sealant applications.

We recommend that you do the training as soon as possible to prepare for the new REACH restriction. The training is valid for five years from the date of the certificate.
